Each month a member of Heart of Biddeford will feature a local business in the weekly newsletter.

November 2019:  New Morning Natural Foods, 230 Main Street

New Morning Natural Foods opened over 30 years ago, in 1976! Owner Sheila Ouellette and her husband opened the store with $1500 and a dream.

When they started in 1976, not many people were talking about natural and organic foods.   They started at 33 Main Street, Biddeford until they were able to buy their current location 29 years ago.  Her son Ryan has done most of the designing and building of the current store. They also have a larger store in Kennebunk, which opened in 1995. Many of her customers at both stores are repeat customers, both for groceries and for the delicious food being served in their Cafe!

Sheila agrees the town is now changing.  She is very proud of Biddeford and is proud to witness the growth.  She says that Biddeford has been good to work with.  Growth of business and more workers in town is a good thing. Sheila now has a total of 20 workers between their 2 stores, 8 in the Biddeford Location.  She prides her workers on having knowledge and education. She hopes that young people take notice and stick with their passions.

October 2019: Spike’s Dog Grooming & Boutique, 193 Main Street

Spike’s Grooming website paraphrases their services best: Spike Dog Grooming and Boutique features luxury spa services, customized bathing and skin care, and skilled styling to breed standard show trims and modern grooming styles – all at the hands of a qualified industry professional.

Spike’s, owned by Liz Jackson, opened at 193 Main Street during the Spring of 2019 and has drawn a dedicated set of customers.

Liz has been a groomer for 6 years and partners with her sister to run Spike Grooming. Her sister manages the paperwork side of the business, and Liz is runs the store and grooms the dogs. Spike’s is currently open Thursday through Sunday but is hopeful to open full time in the future. Her customers like that since not many other groomers are open on weekends, especially on Sunday.

In addition to her business, Liz volunteers her services to the Animal Refuge League by bathing and grooming some of the shelter dogs. You can learn more about Spike Dog Grooming by calling them at 207-423-4038 or visiting their website.
