About Apex Youth Connection:
Apex Youth Connection is a Biddeford based, non-profit youth center that has been serving the York County Community for over 2 decades. We offer low- and no-cost programs to a wide variety of youth between the ages of 8 and 18. The heart of our programs is our Apex Bike Factory, a teaching bike shop that educates youth on basic mechanics, bike repair, tool use, and communication. Our facility is open year round, Monday through Friday for both afterschool and summer programming.
Job Summary: Apex Youth Connection is seeking a full-time Lead Bike Mechanic and Program Mentor to join our dedicated team of youth service professionals. This is a full-time, in-person position with a consistent, year-round schedule. Each workday is divided between bike shop operations and youth programming. Mornings are focused on completing customer repairs, developing curriculum, maintaining inventory, and leading mechanical workshops, while afternoons are dedicated to mentoring youth participants and managing the Apex Bike Factory during after-school programming. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break. During the initial training period, Saturday availability will be required to work alongside our current Lead Mechanic. Occasional weekend availability for special events is also expected, with schedules provided well in advance. The ideal candidate is an organized, adaptable professional with strong communication skills, the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, excellent emotional regulation, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
Key Responsibilities:
● Shop Management Oversee the daily operations of the Apex Bike Factory, including maintaining a clean, organized, and safe workspace, managing inventory and tools, coordinating workflow, and ensuring the shop is prepared for both customer service and youth programming.
● Customer Service and Bike Repair Provide friendly, professional customer service while assessing, repairing, and maintaining bicycles to a high standard. Communicate clearly with customers about repair needs, timelines, and costs, and ensure completed work meets quality and safety expectations.
● Mechanical Education and Youth Mentorship Teach youth ages 8–18 the fundamentals of bicycle mechanics, safe tool use, and workshop practices through hands-on instruction. Foster a positive learning environment by building supportive relationships, modeling professionalism, encouraging teamwork, and helping participants develop confidence, responsibility, communication, and problem-solving skills.
● Pre-Apprenticeship Program Lead Lead and supervise Apex's youth pre-apprenticeship program by providing structured mechanical training, assigning meaningful shop responsibilities, monitoring participant progress, and supporting youth as they develop workforce readiness, leadership, and job skills.
● Program and Curriculum Development Design, implement, and refine engaging educational programming that integrates bicycle mechanics with youth development goals. Develop lesson plans, workshops, and activities that promote technical proficiency, critical thinking, collaboration, and personal growth while supporting the organization's mission and program objectives.
Qualifications
Required
● High school diploma or equivalent.
● Knowledge of basic tool use and workshop safety practices.
● Successful completion of a comprehensive background check.
● Willingness to complete Maine Mandated Reporter Training.
Preferred
● Experience working with youth in an educational, recreational, or mentoring setting.
● Previous bicycle mechanic or bicycle repair experience.
